Window Glass Replacement — questions
Do I need a whole new window, or just the glass?
Usually just the glass. If the frame is square, solid and the hardware works, replacing the glass unit is the cheaper and faster fix. A new window is the better call when the frame itself is rotted, racked out of square, or the window no longer opens and closes properly.
How long does it take?
Most residential glass is ordered to your measurements after the first visit, so there are normally two trips: one to measure, one to install. Install itself is typically under an hour per opening. Lead time depends on the glass type and the supplier, and you will be given a real date rather than a guess.
Can you match glass that has to be tempered?
Yes. Oregon follows the International Residential Code for safety glazing, which requires tempered or laminated glass in specific locations — in and beside doors, around tubs and showers, near the floor, and at stairs and landings. Where code calls for it, that is what gets installed.
